Project Title : Disorders of Fatty acid Oxidation & Mitochondrial Metabolism
General Disease: Hereditary Obesity
General Causes : Disorders of Mitochondrial Metabolism
Disorders of Fatty Acid Metabolism
(Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease)
(Primary Carnitine Deficiency)
Note By Author: Any and all references to "Respiratory pathway" indicate metabolic pathway
whereby oxidation occurs in mitochondria and should not be confused with
oxygen uptake pathway"
Obesity is a growing problem in today's world with reference to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) (2009-2010). Overweight individuals tend to have higher risk to heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure, thus to prevent the disease, we have to first know the causes.
We are going to pick out two diseases of our interest that are classified under Disorders of Mitochondrial Metabolism, and Disorders of Fatty Acid Metabolism. that cause Hereditary Obesity. Under these two disorders there are countless number of diseases which can be inherited from birth or acquired later on in life due to lifestyle and habits. Of which there are the usual hyperglycemia, diabetes mellitus types I and II, cardiovascular diseases and other hepatic diseases.
The disease that we are going to elaborate more on is specifically Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and how it is affected by both mitochondrial disorders and fatty acid transport and metabolism disorders which will lead to unhealthy buildup of both fatty acids in the body and thus lead to abnormal weight gain. Further detailed information will be provided in our article.
Enjoy,
